Many clients will often ask why Prép doesn’t offer acrylic nail services. And here is why!
At Prép, we only use sculpted hard gel, meaning we stick a form onto your nail and build the nail. All without the use of a nail tip. Nail tips and acrylics create a bond that surpasses the strength of natural nail to nail bed. So if the nail is damaged, it will expose the nail bed for fungus and other nasty infections to grow!
In most cases, gel nail extensions will not damage the natural nail if applied by a trained technician such as the ones at Prép. Gel extensions are tend to be more flexible than acrylic nails ,so it will shape to the hand and will feel very comfortable and natural to wear. Acrylics may be uncomfortable to wear as it may bother the cuticle area. If stress is applied to nails, it will bend slightly rather than snap off or damage the natural nail much like acrylics will do. Overuse and wrongful application of primer will lead to damage on nail bed. Many clients will question a ‘dent’ or ‘impression’ on the natural nail. This is caused by abrasive filing using a drill on the natural nail.
With a quick and simple process, gel extensions can be removed by simply hand buffing the top hard gel layer, and then soaking off the nail extension with acetone deluged cotton pad. Whereas acrylic removals require complete soaking of nail in a bowl of 100% acetone, alternating with filing the soft layer between every soak. This can be extremely drying to the cuticle, nail, as well as area around the nail.
Combined with the strong odour, acrylic has chemicals that are used together with powder when applying-these chemicals are notoriously hazardous and contain resins and formaldehyde that have been proven to cause cancer. Frequent acrylic nail applications can result in complete destruction of nail matrix due to exposure to these chemicals. MMA(methyl methacrylate) is often found in acrylic ingredients. And though it is safe to use for dental purposes, it poses as a high risk hazard for use on nails and in a salon. MMA has been known to cause permanent numbness in fingers, severe allergic reactions, and damage to natural nail, as well as respiratory problems from inhaling the acrylic powder.

I prefer gel nails, too. Acrylics look unnatural and I hate that foul odor. It is very important to let technician remove gels because it’s very easy to damage your natural nails.
